What do I need to study this course?

You will need a minimum grade 54 in GCSE Combined Science or in two single GCSE sciences.

What will I study?

The AAQ Applied Science Qualification is a vocational qualification designed for post-16 students who wish to study a broad range of scientific disciplines—biology, chemistry, and physics—with a focus on real-world application rather than just theory.

It replaces previous BTEC National versions and is specifically designed to be taken alongside A-levels or other AAQs as part of a mixed study programme.

The course has the following core components:

  • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Biology – Covers cell biology, tissues, biological molecules, and enzymes.
  • Unit 2: Principles and Applications of Chemistry – Focuses on atomic structure, bonding, periodicity, and chemical kinetics.
  • Unit 3: Principles and Applications of Physics – Explores waves, motion, electricity, and their uses in modern technology.
  • Unit 4: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – Hands-on unit teaching chromatography, titration, and colorimetry .
  • Unit 5 Science Investigation Skills – which involves carrying out an individual investigative project that you have chosen in collaboration with your teacher

This course combines well with subjects such as Psychology, Sociology, Chemistry, Physical Education and Sport, Health and Social Care, and Medical Science.

A combination of AAQ Medical Science, AAQ Applied Science and AAQ Health and Social Care may be a strong alternative to the now defunded Triple Applied Science pathway.

What next?

The qualification is recognised for UCAS points and provides a pathway to university or specialised careers: It is predicted that the course will enable access to:

  • University Degrees: Common routes include Nursing, Midwifery, Biomedical Science, Sports Science, Radiography, and Forensic Science.
  • Apprenticeships: Prepares students for roles as laboratory technicians, research assistants, or engineering apprentices.
