ResTec Performance at Phoenix Dance

Last Friday, the Musical Theatre Lower Sixth group performed at Phoenix Dance Theatre as part of the ResTec platform.

ResTec was created by Phoenix Dance to raise awareness of relevant social issues through dance. The practitioners work with local secondary schools and colleges to apply to perform in the show. The name ResTec, comes from Respect and Protect, and dances are to be choreographed to present a relevant social issue that links to the theme. Notre Dame's Musical Theatre students used the musical Rent to explore issues surrounding the lives of the character's struggles with sexuality, drugs, paying their rent, and life under the shadow of AIDS in the gritty East Village of New York City in the late 80s.

Helen McGinty, who teaches the Musical Theatre course, said 'The students were a credit to Notre Dame all through the process from rehearsal room to performance night on Friday and the experience of performing on a professional stage gave such fantastic experience to our young people - we were also a 'first' to sing at the event to truly represent the Musical Theatre course at ND!'

This is great practice for the Musical Theatre showcase where they will perform Matilda.
