Forensic Science Day Visit

Last week, 11 Lower Sixth students across A-level Chemistry, A-level Biology and Level 3 BTEC Applied Science participated in a forensic science experience day at the University of Bradford. This involved suiting up as crime scene analysts in the morning, where students had to gather samples from a mock crime scene to be used as evidence for a murder investigation. In the afternoon, students processed their results in the forensic labs, using microscopy to analyse hair and fibre samples, lifting and matching fingerprints, and testing items of clothing for blood and gunpowder residue. As well as honing their lab skills, students developed an appreciation for the challenges and 'unanswered questions' in forensic science, and the important roles in this field.

The day finished with a seminar on trauma markings on human bones, and a tour of the blood spatter room.

Demi Summers, Teacher of Chemistry at Notre Dame, said the students worked fantastically as a team (despite many of them being strangers at the start of the day!) and spent the day asking the staff and demonstrators insightful questions. The staff at the University of Bradford commended the students on their positive attitudes and dedication to the day.
