What do I need to study this course?

You will need a minimum grade 54 in GCSE Combined Science or in two single GCSE sciences.

What will I study?

This applied programme brings together biology, chemistry and health science through practical, hands-on learning, alongside theoretical study assessed by examinations. You will develop a strong understanding of the human body, disease processes and laboratory science while building analytical, research and problem-solving skills essential for healthcare and medical careers.

The qualification includes three mandatory units:

  • Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology (Exam)
Study human body systems, cell ultrastructure and the transport of substances within the body.

  • Health Issues and Scientific Reporting (Exam)
Explore the immune system, immune dysfunction, genetic technologies, and assess the validity and reliability of information used in health science reporting.

  • Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (Coursework)
Learn about infectious agents, methods of pathogenicity, microbial growth, and health and safety within a laboratory environment.

Students will also complete one optional unit (Coursework), selected from:

  • Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies – physiological diseases and drug and medicine development

  • Biomedical Science – biomedical laboratory techniques and their clinical applications

  • Human Reproduction and Fertility – reproductive science, infertility and impacts on health and well-being

This course combines well with subjects such as Psychology, Sociology, Chemistry, Physical Education and Sport, Health and Social Care, and Applied Science. A combination of AAQ Medical Science, AAQ Applied Science and AAQ Health and Social Care may be a strong alternative to the now defunded Triple Applied Science pathway.

What next?

A qualification in Medical Science offers excellent progression to university study, apprenticeships and employment within healthcare and science-related industries. Students may progress to degrees such as:

  • BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult, Child or Mental Health)
  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
  • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
  • Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Biomedical Science or Radiography

The course is well respected by universities and employers, supporting progression into roles within the NHS, private healthcare, laboratories, research, and medical science industries.
