'The Wonderland of Studio Ghibli'

The world we all know and love, Studio Ghibli is one of the most classic film production studios of our time creating awe inspiring and warming anime movies.

From the more solemn movies to the more exciting ones, all the movies from Studio Ghibli have something in common: the burning desire of love between the two protagonists in every film which ultimately makes Studio Ghibli one of the more loveable high-end production studios. Not only does this studio promote healthy relationships but also delivers them in a way suitable for people of all ages! Whether that be love, friendship, or even a sense of distaste to another- it avoids the extreme violence which makes me believe that studio Ghibli should be literally mandatory for young children to watch.

However, Studio Ghibli isn’t restricted to only smaller children. Personally, I started watching Studio Ghibli movies at 13! And I definitely wished I watched them earlier.

The masterminds behind these incredible pieces of art are called Hayao Miyazaki (honorary chairman) and Toshio Suzuki (chairman). With the help of other founders, together they create memorable movies with plots that leave you thinking for days after, (or give you a heartache watching these romance movies being single).

Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 based in Tokyo, Japan, and have become one of the best film productions. Studio Ghibli’s more popular movies are Howl’s Moving Castle or Spirited Away. These are great - but there are other many films that are being slept on! My personal favourites are Kiki’s Delivery Service and Whisper of the Heart! I strongly recommend these cute ones, along with Ponyo- very sweet for children, and Princess Mononoke, a story with a more powerful female love interest. A special shoutout to the first Studio Ghibli movie I watched: Grave of the Fireflies. This WW2 themed film left me sobbing for days! I watched it during a sleepover, (and it was embarrassing since I couldn’t stop crying). Definitely recommend for a good cry, unless you’re not as sensitive as I.

Not only is Ghibli’s art style unique and instantly recognisable, but it adds more depth to the story and plot of the film. Alongside this, the soundtracks are also specifically made for Studio Ghibli and every time it’s a beautiful melody! For example, Merry-Go-Round from Howl’s Moving Castle theme was made by Joe Hisashi - a Japanese composer and music director. He and Miyazaki were close friends before Studio Ghibli was even formed. Now that is true friendship even outside of the movie genre. Hisashi is very talented, and Studio Ghibli wouldn’t be the same without him. His soundtracks add so much more depth to the movies and increase the sensitivity of specific scenes.

All in all, Studio Ghibli has left a very impactful affect on the world with its beautiful storytelling, setting high standards for younger audiences (alongside the romanticism). Its movies have created a global fanbase especially with more prestigious movies like Spirited Away, which have won many incredible awards such as the Best Animated feature, and ultimately highlights this studio’s impact on cinemas as a whole. I might have to start a Studio Ghibli marathon tonight, and I implore you to do the same!
