Trinity Cup 2026

Congratulations to the 25 Year 9 and 10 pupils who joined us for the Trinity Cup at Notre Dame this week. The debating competition, which is sponsored by Leeds Trinity University, encouraged pupils to discuss collaboratively with other teams to get clearer on a variety of philosophy, theology and ethics questions, including 'Does everything happen for a reason?' and 'Can an AI robot be a monk?' Each high school team was welcomed and mentored by volunteers Lower Sixth Notre Dame students, helping to give the day a wonderfully positive, supportive atmosphere.

Dr Richard Playford came as guest judge from Leeds Trinity University. In his closing remarks he acknowledged the impressive progress pupils made in their confidence and the quality of their discussion over the course of the day. He said: "The process of talking through ideas and discussing questions is so important in helping us get clear on difficult questions, and this is something which we do not often get the opportunity to do these days."

Two students were awarded individual Stella Maris prizes for virtue, one from St John Fisher Dewsbury and one from Corpus Christi. Justine Barlow, Principal at Notre Dame, congratulated them on showing compassion and respect towards others, and for perseverance and growth in courage. All the teams did themselves proud, and it was difficult to choose an overall winner. In the end the trophy went to a team from St John Fisher Catholic High School, Harrogate, for their high quality critical thinking and consistent collaboration with others.
