During our Enrichment Days, the History and Politics department went on their annual trip to Berlin taking 30 students with them. The trip is unique as it gives the students the opportunity to experience interrailing as they travel all the way from Leeds to Berlin via train. The journey started at 6.40am from Leeds to London then the group got the Eurostar to Brussels where they tried some famous fries and mayonnaise before heading on a short train to Cologne, Germany and then got their final train journey to Berlin where they arrived just after midnight. Travelling by train significantly reduced their carbon footprint, something that Notre Dame is continuously trying to work on in our efforts to help tackle climate change and working towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, which you can find more about here.
Once in Berlin, the students had three full action-packed days in the city, doing plenty of sight-seeing and exploring culture as well as learning more about the history and politics of Berlin. Check out some highlights below -
- DDR Museum
- Karl Marx Statue
- East Side Gallery
- Treptower Park
- Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauerstrasse
- Checkpoint Charlie
- Jewish Museum
- Bundestag Dome
- Tour of the Olympic Stadium
- Holocaust Memorial
- Brandenburg Gate
You can also read what some of the students on the trip had to say about it:
"The trip was an amazing experience; it not only allowed me to build upon my understanding of the Cold War and World War II, but also gave me the opportunity to meet new people and witness incredible sights like the Brandenburg Gate and the Olympiastadion. A truly unforgettable experience."
"I loved going to Berlin. Everyone on our trip was really nice, the teachers were lovely and we saw some amazing places. I learnt a lot about the city and it's history and made some brilliant friends."
"The friendships forged on this trip, alongside the culture and sights you see are immeasurable. This is a great trip to go on of you have the opportunity to!"
