Lower Sixth student Matejus Varnelis has been crowned Lithuania's under-20 National Decathlon Champion after an outstanding three days of competition across ten demanding track and field events.
Supported throughout by his father and coach, Matejus excelled across all disciplines to secure the gold medal and national title. A decathlon covers the 10 following events:
- 100m sprint
- Long jump
- Shot put
- High jump
- 400m
- Hurdles
- Discus
- Pole vault
- Javelin
- 1500m
During the championships, he achieved three personal best performances in the long jump (6.4m), discus (37m) and javelin (42m).
His victory means Matejus has qualified to represent Lithuania at the Baltic Championships in Latvia this May.
Balancing elite-level athletics with his studies requires significant commitment, with him often training for up to four hours each evening alongside his academic responsibilities.
Previously, Matejus competed for England at under-16 level and now has ambitions of competing at the European under-20 Championships, the England National Championships, and the English Schools competitions. He is also aiming to secure an athletics scholarship to a university in the United States.
Well done Matejus!
