Last week, the Enhancing Excellence department took a group of 36 students to Cambridge, organised by Cambridge HE+, an initiative designed to challenge academically the brightest young people across inner cities to raise the aspirations and encourage applications to very selective universities. The day included a tour around Selwyn College, a sample lecture by Cambridge academics in a range of students' chosen subjects, and free time in the city with university student guides.
Students also received a session with a current Selwyn College student, including Notre Dame alum, Alice Cammegh who is currently studying English. Alice sat her A-levels in summer 2024, achieving an impressive three A*s. It is fantastic to see our students succeed in their next steps.

Students reflected on the opportunity:
'The experience was really insightful. Talking to students really helped me in getting a better idea about university life and academic pressure. The best part overall was our walk to town.' - Maryam
'I enjoyed the experience and enlightened myself the opportunities at Cambridge, both academic and social.' - Chiedza
'The lecture on somatosensation and phantom limbs by Stuart Eves was fascinating and he made sure to answer any questions people had, I found it particularly interesting how it is not only amputees who experience phantom limbs but people born with a limb different can also experience it, due to the brain's neural mapping.' - Mia
The Enhancing Excellence Programme supports and encourages students of high academic potential to apply to Oxford, Cambridge and other top world universities, and/or those wishing to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science degrees, due to their highly competitive nature.
