Sacramental Mass

On Tuesday 19th May we celebrated Mass as five students came to the end of their sacramental preparation and received sacraments. The student receiving the sacrament of Baptism stood with their sponsor at the font as the Litany of Saints was sung. They made the profession of faith and then Fr Marc Pitson poured water over their head and baptised them, saying, "I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."  Their sponsor handed them a lighted candle, representing their call to bring the light of Christ into the world, and they wore their white baptismal garment.

Then all five students received the sacrament of Confirmation. Together with their sponsors they stood in front of Fr Marc and the sacrament was administered to them, anointing their foreheads with the oil of chrism and announcing their Confirmation name from their chosen saint.

Later in the Mass two of the students received their First Eucharist.

It was a joyous and faith filled celebration with families, friends, staff and external colleagues joining together to support and celebrate with the students. The Staff Choir supported the liturgy with beautiful music including Veni Creator Spiritus during the sacrament of Confirmation.

Our Lay Chaplain, Anne Merry said, "The whole reason we have gone on this journey is down to the students themselves. They asked how to reconnect with the sacraments, which enabled others to come forward and learn more about the Catholic Faith. It was an absolute privilege to journey with each of these young people and support them as their Catechist. Each one of them has shown great maturity and faith and have blown me away with their commitment. They are true witnesses to the Gospel!"

Upper Sixth student, Sophia, who received the sacrament of Confirmation said, "I thought these two years would pass me by where I would merely receive my qualifications and leave right afterwards. But involving myself within the college chaplaincy meant that I could reconnect with the faith that I had grown so used to yet knew nothing about all the same. I grew more sure of myself the more I engaged with Priests, my Lay Chaplain and the Diocese of Leeds overall and it has led me to take Theology and Religion going into university at a time where I had no idea what it was I wanted to do in the future."
