Royal Society of Chemistry Schools' Analyst Competition

Last term, 23 Lower Sixth Chemistry students took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools' Analyst Competition. This was a day of practical activities where students worked in teams to apply their knowledge and lab skills to determine whether land once used for industry could be used to build homes. They completed titrations, thin layer chromatography and analysed ions through flame tests and test tube reactions.

Students submitted their results to be marked externally, and the winning team from Notre Dame was Hayden Ng, Kate Joseph, and Megha Dheeraj! Runners up were Tobin Rogers, Nathanial Marsh, Johns Judin, Lorna Boomer, Kaitlin Corbett and Mollie Moran. Unfortunately we were not the regional winners this year, but students found the enrichment useful:

'I found the competition to be interesting and enjoyable - I enjoyed the combination of the competition element and independently carrying out practicals that we had previously learnt about in small groups. The skills of teamwork and independent thought that I learnt during the practical competition will be useful to me in the future!'

'I found that competition really useful because it allowed me to experience chemistry outside of the classroom. I also enjoyed doing the practicals with my teammates as it helped me gain valuable teamwork and communication skills.'
