On November 11th it was Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day. This commemorates the end of World War I, and on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, a two minute silence is observed to remember those who have died in all conflicts. Staff and students gathered on Monday to mark the day with a series of respectful and reflective events held across the campus.
On the morning, a Mass of Remembrance was held in the Chapel. The service was able to provide a moment of calm and reflection in the midst of a busy term.
At 11am, the college observed the traditional two-minute silence, with lessons paused and students standing in quiet reflection to honour all those who have lost their lives in conflict. The Last Post sounded through the college’s speaker system, echoing through corridors and study spaces as a reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women.
In the Main Reception by the cross, a remembrance box was placed for staff and students to write the names of those they had lost. this was surrounded by a display of crafted poppies, created by staff with Lay Chaplain Anne Merry as a 'mindful making moment'. These names will then be entered into the Book of Remembrance in the Chapel.
