'Red Beret'

Red beret.

A hat I saw on that hot spring day.

My first demo, definitely not my last.

It reminded me of our past.

A difficult, tragic story; one no one should have had to live through.

Our faces beaten black and blue.

A woman who had lived through the fear of Section 28.

A time of silence, of intestate.

Oppression and violence against us all.

Now we must stand together and stand tall.

We get faced with brutal reality we shouldn’t have to live.

Abused, assaulted and shouted at by kids.

We are a community; we care for each other.

We need to be able to understand one another.

Fight for yourself, fight for your friends, fight for us all until the very end. For I know that woman in the red beret will wish to see you fight so we may all see a better day.
