Jewellery Making for House of the Dragon

Katie James, one of Notre Dame's Art Technicians has a jewellery business that she runs outside of work. Katie was approached by HBO and asked to provide 400 pieces of jewellery for the House of the Dragon Leicester Square World Premiere. HBO is a powerhouse TV network and streaming site, who have created shows such as Game of Thrones, Succession, The White Lotus, and of course House of the Dragon.

The jewellery was to be given away as gifts to all guests (including the cast!) at the Old Sessions House afterparty.

With the mammoth task ahead of her - creating 400 earrings and brooches in sterling silver chainmail in one month, Katei enlisted the help from university students. This included Notre Dame alum Francesca Carbonell who studied A-level Fine Art. She has since completed her foundation degree in Art and Design at Leeds Arts University and has secured a place at the Royal School of Needlework in Hampton Court Palace to student hand embroidery, starting this September.

Katie trained her in how to make chainmail from scratch, starting with just a length of wire. Francesca worked the most hours out of everyone, showing real dedication and care over the work. When the event itself approached, Katie needed further help during the evening so was joined by Francesca. During the event, she demonstrated the techniques she had learned so guests could see them being made in-situ.

Kate said: "I'm really glad that I was able to provide some industry experience to a former student just starting out, and share a bit about what it's like to run a creative business. I couldn't have done it without her help."
