We've had success again this year in the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators run by Queen's College, University of Oxford. One of our L6 French students, Maja Sharp, was awarded a Commendation!
The competition involved translating a very challenging extract from Marcel Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu (In search of lost time) which meant dealing with the author's famously long sentences and concept of 'involuntary memory'.
The competition is named in honour of one of the most influential literary translators of the 20th/21st centuries and aims to inspire creativity among young linguists. It is judged by a team of Oxford students and professional literary translators.
This year, the competition organisers stated that "Over 25,000 students participated in the competition in 2026, and we judged over 5,400 entries, so this is a fantastic achievement. Our judges also commented on the very high standard of entries this year and remarked that it was extremely hard to choose winners and commendations."
So it's a fantastic achievement by Maja!
