Earlier this month Notre Dame alumnus, Andrei Bărbulescu graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, English-taught programme, from the University of Milano-Bicocca. He received a scholarship throughout his studies and graduated with an incredibly impressive mark of 105 out of 110, to be awarded a First Class Honours. The University of Milano-Bicocca is ranked 5th nationally in the medical field, commended for its academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and strong international outlook. During University, Andrei explored how medications used in acute heart failure affect the interaction between heart function and vascular resistance, in his thesis 'Impact of Vasodilators and Inotropes on Left and Right Ventricular-Arterial Coupling in Patients with Acute Heart Failure'. His research now contributes to a better understanding of ventricular-arterial coupling, a crucial concept in cardiovascular medicine, and may help guide future therapeutic strategies for critically ill patients.

Andrei studied at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College between 2017-2019, achieving an outstanding A*A*A in his A-levels. He has clearly continued in his success following his two years here, and we have no doubts that he will continue to excel in the medical field. Andrei puts his success down to his time at Notre Dame, saying he felt appreciated for his capacities and could study his favourite courses that allowed him, in a truly welcoming environment, to flourish and be successful in his application process for Medicine in Italy. His connection to Notre Dame and compassion was shown early on during his time at medical school, when he helped a cyclist who had collapsed by giving CPR and emergency care until the emergency services arrived - care that he learnt from a first-aid course he completed at Notre Dame. Bărbulescu was recognised by the Romanian Ambassador to Italy for his heroism.
