What Matty Did Next: Olympic Hopes for Medal-Winning Ex-Student

Notre Dame alumnus Matty Lee has another sporting medal to add to his collection.

Having teamed up with world champion diver Tom Daley (yes, that Tom Daley) around a year ago, Matty recently competed with him in the FINA World Championships. On July 15 2019, the pair won a bronze medal in the men’s 10m synchronised diving event. This achievement secured them a place in the same event for Team GB at next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.

This news was especially welcome to the Notre Dame community, as Matty studied with us from 2014 to 2016. In additional to training for – and competing in – various European and world diving championships, Matty completed a BTEC in sport. It was a surprise to no one when he passed with flying colours.

We always knew Matty was destined for great things. In 2015, he competed in the FINA World Championships, won the 10m platform gold medal at the inaugural European Games, and was awarded the Young Sportsman of the Year trophy.

We can only imagine what he’ll go on to achieve, and would like to wish him the very best of luck from all of us here at college.
