Oxford Offers Insight for Notre Students

On Friday 23 April, Oxbridge hopefuls from Notre Dame’s lower sixth attended a second virtual Oxbridge event.

A team from Worcester College, our partner college at Oxford University, ran a two-hour webinar describing academic and social life at the University and explaining how to make a competitive application. 60 students filled the Lecture Theatre to socially distanced capacity with 20 more watching over Teams.

Worcester College Admissions Tutor Ms. Claire Sims delivered a comprehensive and engaging presentation outlining what she and her colleagues look for in applicants. She focused on what students can do beyond their lessons to evidence passion for their subjects, providing attendees with plenty of ideas and resources.

The webinar also included an undergraduate’s eye view, provided by Notre Dame ex-student Isla Gerrard, whom staff were excited to welcome back, albeit virtually. Isla is in her second year reading law at the University.

The student comments posted at the end of the event were highly positive. “This was so helpful – thanks for all your advice and effort,” one said.

Notre Dame lower sixth interested in applying to the UK’s most competitive universities will be attending workshops each week from now on, whether they are Oxbridge aspirants or potential medical, dental or veterinary students. Perhaps in a few years time, some of them will return to college to share their experiences, as Isla did.
