On 2 February , with a very early start of 6am, A level Art students boarded the coach at Notre Dame and prepared themselves for the 4 hour journey ahead. Their destination: the UK’s most prestigious art galleries, the Tate Modern and Tate Britain, London.
Home to some of the most famous names in both modern and historical art, the experience allowed students’ studies to come to life, awakening text book images into full scale extraordinaires.
Every taste was catered for; historical painted portraits such as Portrait of Elizabeth I (1533–1603), earliest known full-length portrait of the queen; Chris Ofilis’ Turner prize winning mixed media painting No Woman No Cry (1998); and many other exemplary sculpture, textiles and printmaking pieces from the past 4 centuries including work from leading artists such as Man Ray, Bridget Riley, Jackson Pollock and Rachel Whiteread.
The location of the art galleries, one on either side of the River Thames, allowed for a special guided tour en route from our coach driver, showing students some of the iconic sights of London including; Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the Shard, Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus.
The inspiring day trip is the starting point for students embarking on their A level Art exam projects.
