As part of the NCOP-funded Future Engineers programme, 18 Notre Dame students visited The University of Manchester for a Discover Engineering event on Wednesday 5 December.
To kick off the event, university lecturers representing the full variety of engineering disciplines engaged in a ‘Battle of the Engineers’, each giving a fast paced and inspirational ten-minute overview of their degree programme, including course content, entry requirements and future career prospects.
Our students were then able to select from a range of engaging mini workshops delivered by PHD students studying at the university, on subjects such as ‘How to Make Them Fly’, ‘Zero and One is Zero?’ and ‘£4.2 million of chocolate?!’. This gave our students the chance to find out more about current engineering projects and to get hands-on with a range of practical activities, as well as providing an opportunity for them to quiz PHD students on their specialist subject areas. Throughout the day, student ambassadors from the university were on hand to offer support and answer questions.
After lunch on campus, and a further mini workshop, our students attended a Q & A panel with current engineering undergraduates, asking an impressive number of thoughtful and intelligent questions.
Head of Careers, Mrs Anna Dickinson, said: ‘Overall the trip was a great success and it was lovely to visit The University of Manchester and see how well our students adapted to a higher education environment. All our students were very well behaved and extremely professional: I felt really proud of them all.
‘The event itself was very well organised. Our students felt they got a lot of information from the day and really enjoyed listening to lecturers and current PHD students. The practical workshops were fun and inspiring, and it was great to see the students fully engaged in the tasks they were set. I’d like to thank the university for organising such a great day for Notre Dame Future Engineers: we look forward to visiting again soon.’
