Each year Notre Dame’s Maths Department supports its students to enter the UK Mathematics Trust’s Senior Mathematical Challenge.
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a charitable organisation that aims to advance the education of young people in mathematics. Organising competitions like the one our students enter forms a large part of their work. You can read more about this here: https://www.ukmt.org.uk/what-we-do/aim
This year more than 50 of our students took part in the Senior Mathematical Challenge. They performed very well, with 24 achieving a Bronze award, 22 a Silver award, and two receiving the prestigious Gold award. These two students, Stella Jaquiss (upper sixth) and Eryk Mocniak (lower sixth), were also jointly presented with the prestigious ‘Best in School’ certificate, as you can see from the photo above.
This means that Stella and Eryk have both qualified for the next stage of the competition, the Senior Kangaroo. As the UKMT website explains, ‘The name Kangaroo acknowledges the contribution made by Australia to establishing large-scale mathematics contests.’
Reflecting on these excellent results, Mr Julian Chapman of the Maths Department said, ‘Congratulations to Stella, Eryk and the rest of the participants for such amazing results. We’re incredibly proud of each and every one of you. You all approached the competition in a positive way and showed your love of mathematics. You're a credit to Notre Dame, well done!’
