Invaluable Insight into Oxbridge Life.

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College hosted an ‘Oxbridge’ (Oxford and Cambridge Universities) conference on 20 March. Around 120 students attended, mostly from Notre Dame but also from other schools in the Leeds area.

During the morning of the event, admissions tutors from Worcester College, Oxford, and Selwyn College, Cambridge delivered lively and informative presentations which gave students a clear idea about what it was like to study at Oxbridge. They also dispelled a number of misapprehensions which students had about whether either university could possibly be for them.

The tutors were accompanied by six current Oxbridge students who’d attended high school in Yorkshire. Our students found their presence extremely helpful and felt more than able to relate to these ambassadors, asking them a variety of questions. These included queries as to the cost of living, and the likelihood of getting part-time work – the latter is not advised during term time, but the longer Oxbridge holidays mean that vacation jobs are easy to find.

In addition to the morning presentations, a number of workshops ran during the afternoon, focusing on specific subject areas. This combination of activities over the course of the conference enabled our students to gain a much clearer idea of whether Oxford and Cambridge Universities might be the right fit for their higher education studies.

Notre Dame student Hannah Boyle said: ‘I thought the day was really helpful and made the whole idea of applying to Oxbridge seem less daunting as it explained the application process and answered all my questions.’

Many thanks to the Enhancing Excellence team for organising this event.
