Inspiring Public Figures Share Experiences with our Students During Mission Week

As part of our annual Mission Week at Notre Dame, students experience some extraordinary accounts from remarkable people around the world, all of whom have followed a call to serve others.

This year, the week began on Monday 4 June with Father Eamon Mulcahy who spoke about his experience of caring for, and living among, the people of Kibera, the world’s largest slum in Kenya. On Tuesday, Ottih Emmanuel gave a talk on his experience in the British Army, focusing on how he overcame a stammer in order to be able to serve. Midweek we invited back former student Malvern Magwanjere who gave an inspiring presentation on his journey from being an under-motivated A level student to a hard working philosophy undergraduate at Durham University, and his ambition to work as a mentor with young people. Thursday saw Bernadette Barnes talk to students about her experience with the Sylvia Wright Trust. Bernadette is a friend and supporter of Sylvia Wright, who left Leeds 36 years ago to care for the sick and disabled in Tamil Nadu in India. She discussed her life in Tamil Nadu, and the work of this remarkable woman and its impact on her. Tom Chigbo, who became the first black president of the Cambridge University Students’ Union, rounded up the week. Tom is a community organiser of Leeds Citizens UK and once said ‘The way politics is conducted in this country does not give people enough respect and recognition’.  He spoke about his mission to change this!

All these visits were organised by Notre Dame teacher Miss Stapylton who stated, ‘It has been a real privilege to welcome such wise and thought-provoking speakers to Notre Dame and to see our students listen and interact so maturely with them.’

Thanks to all our inspiring speakers, and everyone involved in making this week a success!
