Eight students and two staff attended an informative and inspiring taster day at Sheffield Hallam University on Thursday 15 November as part of the NCOP Future Teachers programme.
The students have all signed up to a suite of activities which will support them in exploring higher education courses and careers in the education sector. The visit to Sheffield Hallam was the first event to take place after the programme launched earlier this month.
When they arrived, our students received a warm welcome from university staff, then listened to a variety of lecturers speaking on subjects such as the history of education, the importance of teaching modern foreign languages to primary school-aged children, and what learning actually is. Students also had the opportunity to visit a classroom which had been transformed into an early learning setting to explore the importance of play in education.
Over the course of the day, students found out about different routes into education careers and their standard entry requirements. They also took part in a campus tour and spent their lunch break in the centre of Sheffield, getting a feel for the city. Head of Careers Mrs Anna Dickinson said: ‘Overall I would say this was a fantastic Education Taster Day organised by Sheffield Hallam University. Our students gained an invaluable insight into studying an education-related degree and were able to engage with current undergraduate students.’
