Charity Begins at… College

Every year during Advent, the chaplaincy and pastoral team choose a number of charities to support. For 2020 these are:

Homeless Street Angels
“We currently provide outreach every Thursday evening on the streets of Leeds City Centre, handing out hot and cold food, clean clothes, toiletries and more. We also provide ongoing support for our guys that we have helped to rehouse in Headingley.” Find out more here.

Beacon Leeds
We have supported this charity for the past six years. Beacon provides accommodation and tailored support services for around 230 people at any given time. Even during the pandemic, this organization is still able to provide a variety of housing options for vulnerable people with multiple and complex needs. You can read more about this here.

Catholic Care
“Wherever possible, we work to prevent crises, particularly in the lives of young people. Our schools, children and family wellbeing service works to prevent family breakdowns, for example. We also help children and young people to handle issues such as bullying, separations and bereavement in a way that does not prevent them from reaching their potential.”
This charity supports students in Catholic schools and colleges, no matter their religious background. Visit their website here.

We’ve asked our staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for Homeless Street Angels and Beacon Leeds, leaving them under our Christmas tree in the main hall. So far, we’ve had enough boxes and bags of tins, packets and jars to fill two cars! In addition, many members of our community have made cash donations to Catholic Care, raising £250.

Our Lay Chaplain Mr. Andrew Sullivan said, “Notre Dame is at its best when it’s most generous.”

Mrs. Catherine Herring, our Director of Catholic Life, added, “These donations make a real difference to the lives of struggling families and it also lets them know that someone cares for them.”

Thanks to all the staff and students who’ve contributed to these worthy causes in the lead up to Christmas.
