Students Become ITV Newscasters for the Day!

A selection of Media Studies students visited ITV Yorkshire’s Calendar News on 17th November in order to take part in their ‘Open Newsroom’ event. The event was intended to encourage and inspire students from diverse backgrounds to consider the media and ITV as a possible career path.

The visiting students had the opportunity to see first-hand how a news department worked, watching a variety of people in editorial and technical roles carry out their work. They had great fun working with ITV weather presenter Jon Mitchell, who instructed the students how to work with a green screen and read an autocue. They also watched Calendar newsreader Duncan Wood both in the news studio and from the gallery; finally, the visitors got to have a look around the satellite truck and use the equipment to carry out a mock live transmission of a news report.

“It was a fun and useful day,” said Lauren Moore, one of the students who took part in the visit. “I eventually want to work in film, so I found the technical instruction really helpful for what I want to do in the future.”

Thank you to the Media Studies department for organising the visit and to Yorkshire ITV for making the opportunity available to Notre Dame.
