You need to have either grade 4 or above in two single science GCSE’s, or grade 44 in GCSE Combined Science, or at least a merit in a level 2/ intermediate applied science course. A minimum of grade 4 in GCSE English and in GCSE Maths is required. You must also have a genuine interest in the subject and have the motivation to apply yourself to the course.

What will I study?
You will acquire and apply various practical techniques and learn about their use in industry, medicine and research. You will develop transferable higher order skills that are valued by universities and employers.
The course is 100% coursework based and divided into units which are assessed as assignments. These are internally graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. The point scores of these grades are accumulated to ascertain your final mark. On the Diploma the highest mark you can achieve is a Distinction*/Distinction* which is equivalent to two A* at A level.
On the Diploma you will study compulsory units plus a number of optional units.
Compulsory units include: Unit 1 Fundamentals of Science, Unit 2 Working in the Science Industry, Unit 3 Scientific Investigations, Unit 4 Scientific Practical Techniques, Unit 5 Perceptions of Science, Unit 6 Using Mathematical Tools in Science, and Unit 7 Mathematical Calculations for Science.
Optional units include: Unit 19 Practical Chemical Analysis, Unit 22 Chemical Laboratory Techniques, Unit 11 Physiology of Human Body Systems, Unit 12 Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction, Unit 20 Medical Physics Techniques, Unit 44 Astronomy.

Past students have studied health-related or applied science degrees, and gone into careers in healthcare, leisure, laboratory-based science, or catering.
