IT Help

OPENING TIMES

Monday + Tuesday + Thursday: 08.30 - 16.30
Wednesday + Friday: 08.30 - 16.00

The I.T. Suite offers services and facilities to support the study needs of all students.

User accounts - To use any of the college's computer facilities, you must use your own user account that will be issued to you at the beginning of the academic year. Access to this user account will be controlled by both a user name and password which in part will be based on some of the information on your Notre Dame student ID card. The same password will also give you access to your college email account and to moodle. If you forget your password you will need to show your ID card before it can be reset.

Students are reminded that attempting to access, accessing or changing another students data are all criminal offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and as such will be dealt with severely by the college.

Student data - Students are advised to save their work into their network directories/folders before saving to floppy discs or USB pens. All network data is backed up regularly so you are unlikely to lose work. Floppy discs (and some USB pens) are inherently unreliable and should not be used to save your only copy of your work. In particular, following the advice of examination boards, no extra time beyond set deadlines can be given if you fail to keep adequate back up copies of your coursework. The use of floppy discs, and USB pens, should be limited to the transfer of data between home and college where you do not have access to an internet connection and cannot upload/download your data via your email account, as a file attachment, or where the files you wish to transfer are too large.

Accommodation - There are three teaching bays with approximately 20 computers in each, in the I.T. suite. These are used for teaching purposes and drop in students are not allowed into these bays. There are 38 computers that are available for access, in the drop in area. Students who wish to use these must show their Notre Dame student ID cards when asked to do so. Students who do not have their Notre Dame ID card with them will be asked to leave the IT suite. Replacement ID cards are available from the MIS office for a small fee.

If the IT Suite is full, computers can be found in the Library or in rooms LS1 to LS2 (Study Link in the Cuvilly building) for drop in use.

Printing - There are black and white printing facilities in each of the teaching bays as well as on the IT Technician's desk for the drop in area. A colour printer is also available. Please do not waste paper by printing out pages directly from the Internet. Any information you require from an internet page should be copied and pasted into a word processor such as Word before printing.

Scanning - Scanners are available for you to use. Please do not touch the glass on the scanning area as this leaves fingerprints that can ruin a subsequent scan.

Photocopying - is available in the Library on a self-service basis.
Conduct in the I.T. Suite

Students must have their (valid) Notre Dame student ID card with them to use the facilities.
The IT Suite is for quiet, individual working like the library. If you wish to talk please go to the common room.
Mobile phones must be switched off and put away.
No food or drink (or chewing gum!) is allowed in the IT suite.
Games, chat pages or the use of instant messaging systems are not allowed. Computers are provided in college for work not leisure.
E-mail is permitted if you can show that it is work related, in which case we would reasonably expect you to use your college e-mail account or moodle
Students should not attempt to install any software on the college computers, as all software must be covered by a college licence.
Additional instructions from any member of staff on duty in the IT suite must be followed.

If you break any of the above rules you will be asked to leave the IT Suite by a member of staff for the rest of the session. Please do not argue with the member of staff about this, as, along with repeat offences, this will lead to a longer ban. Students who persistently flout the rules may result in their permanent exclusion from the IT Suite and this may subsequently lead to further disciplinary procedures.

The college reserves the right to close the IT Suite to students at short notice.
