Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College is located in inner Leeds. Our students are predominantly from the local area and almost all follow A level programmes. 59% come from widening participation backgrounds and many students will be the first generation of their family to enter into higher education.
Our curriculum offer mainly consists of A levels but we have a growing number of BTEC and CTEC courses available (level 3 diplomas and extended certificates are currently available but not extended diplomas). We offer 33 subjects, some of which are offered both as an A level and a BTEC or CTEC. Students are generally expected to take three subjects at level 3, although a small number of students take 4 subjects based on their excellent prior achievement. However, continuing with 4 subjects to A level is not the norm and is not encouraged unless the student is academically and mentally able to cope with this.
The majority of A levels we offer are now linear, although current lower sixth students will have a mix. AS exams are not offered on reformed subjects as a rule.
The EPQ is offered as an additional subject to students with very good GCSE profiles or students who have done well in year one. We are moving towards more of an open access policy this year.
In terms of GCSE re-sitters, these are the awarding bodies we use:
English – WJEC
Maths – Pearson/Edexcel
Level 1 and 2 functional skills are also offered.
Re: GCSE English Qualifications
For students who completed their GCSE in 2017, the college policy regarding GCSE English entry requirements is as follows: ‘Any learners who achieve a grade 4 in GCSE English Literature are not required to resit English Language if they achieve below a grade 4 in this subject’.
Please be mindful of this when assessing applications from our learners.
