This qualification is equivalent to a maximum of 2 A-levels (see ‘What will I study?’ below).
You should have grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language and Maths. Alternatively, you must have at a Merit in a Level 2/Intermediate ICT course that is equivalent to 3 or 4 GCSEs, along with at least 3 other GCSE subjects.
What will I study?
This qualification aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the principles of IT and Global Information Systems. Students will gain an insight into the IT sector as they investigate the pace of technological change, IT infrastructure, and the flow of information on a global scale and the importance of legal and security considerations.
You will be required to complete a number of units covering different areas of the industry. At least two units will be assessed by an external exam and the other units will be assessed internally by coursework set assignments and moderated externally.
There are 3 IT qualifications on offer at Level 3.
Certificate in IT (AS equivalent, worth up to 28 UCAS points)
-over 1 year using 1 teaching block
Extended Cert in IT (single A-Level, worth up to 56 UCAS points)
-over 1 year using 2 teaching blocks, or
-over 2 years using 1 teaching block
Diploma in IT (double A-level, worth up to 112 UCAS points)
-over 2 years using 2 teaching blocks
Note: UCAS points quoted are under the new 2017 Tariff. A single A-level is worth a maximum of 56 points.
