This course is equivalent to up to two A levels (see ‘What will I study’ below). You should have four GCSEs grades 4 and above, including a minimum of grade 3 in English Language (though preferably grade 4) and a grade C or above in Physical Education. With supporting GCSE’s a Merit in a Level 2/Intermediate vocational Sport course would also be acceptable. It is essential that you are currently performing in at least 1 sport so that you can provide video evidence for practical assessment. The course also includes sports coaching and fitness training programme, therefore a high level of motivation for the subject is necessary.
What will I study?
Specialist pathways are available in coaching, leadership and physical education. This course is intended to provide students with an introduction to the world of sport and the sports industry, enabling them to investigate a range of areas to study. Most students complete the extended certificate (equivalent to 1 A level) in the first year along with an additional subject, and go on to complete the diploma in their second year (equivalent to 2 A levels). However there is also the option to maintain 3 subject areas at Notre Dame by opting for the certificate course in the first year and the extended certificate in the second year. CERTIFICATE You will study: Body systems and the effects of physical activity; sports coaching and activity leadership. EXTENDED CERTIFICATE (equivalent to one full A level) You will study: Sports organisation and development; Organisation of sports events; Sports injuries and rehabilitation. DIPLOMA (equivalent to two full A levels) You will study: Performance Analysis in Sport and Exercise; Working safely in sport exercise health and leisure; Practical Skills in sport and Physical Activities; Health and fitness testing for sport; Sport and Exercise Psychology; Preparing to work in sport; Physical activities for specific groups.
This qualification is not just about being able to play sport, it will provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress into Higher Education on a sport-related programme such as Sport and Physical Education, Sport Science, Sport Coaching and Development or Sport and Leisure Management
