What do I need to study this course?

GCSE Grade B in both Core and Additional Science or grade B in Biology, and also Maths and English Language at GCSE grade 4 or above.


What will I study?

FIRST YEAR OF A LEVEL
The topics you will study are: Biological Molecules; Cells; Organisms Exchange Substances with their Environment; and Genetic Information, Variation and Relationships Between Organisms.

SECOND YEAR OF A LEVEL
The topics covered in the second year are: Energy Transfers in and Between Organisms; How Organisms Respond to Changes in their Internal and External Environments; Genetics, Populations, Evolution and Ecosystems; and The Control of Gene Expression.

The A level specification in Biology provides an opportunity to develop literacy, numeracy, employability and technical skills. Biology is fundamentally an experimental subject, the course provides numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality, and equip students with the essential practical skills.


What next?

Numerous career opportunities exist. These include medical professions, environmental biology, forensic science, industry, biotechnology, the scientific civil service, research and education. Students who wish to read biological or medical subjects at university will usually need to study Chemistry at Advanced Level as well.
