Students and staff from the maths department had cause to celebrate last week, with outstanding performances in the individual and team competition of the Senior Maths Challenge.
Organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, the Senior Challenge is aimed at all 16 to 19 year olds studying mathematics at advanced level. The individual challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions. The top 60% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate. The regional round of the team competition was held at The University of Leeds on November 10th and saw Notre Dame enter a team for the first time in four years.
Having never finished higher than 17th position previously in the regional round of the team competition, everyone was thrilled with this year’s 8th place finish. Although the team, made up of upper sixth students Joe Marsden and Li Xuan and lower sixth students Patrick Lake and Izaak Johnson, ‘dropped the baton’ in the final relay round, the team gave an excellent performance in a closely fought competition in the company of teams such as Leeds Grammar and Bradford Grammar. The eventual winners were Horsforth School, who had the advantage of a 13 year old mathematical prodigy on their team. Well done to all four boys and we look forward to Patrick and Izaak returning to represent Notre Dame again next year.
In the individual contest, Notre Dame received the highest number of overall and gold awards in the history of entering the competition! 70% of our students received a certificate this year, which is significantly higher than the national average. Overall, we gained 7 gold awards, 24 silvers and 16 bronze certificates. Six students will also go on to compete in the ‘Senior Kangaroo’, a consolation competition for entrants who narrowly missed out on the score required to compete in the ‘Olympiad’ – again, this is a new record for Notre Dame.
Very well done to all students who took part and thank you to Mr Watson and the rest of the maths department for their hard work. Pictured are the Notre Dame team from the regional competition; L-R Li Xuan, Izaak Johnson, Joe Marsden and Patrick Lake.
